The ability to travel safely and efficiently is an important aspect of the quality of life in Northeast Washington. Freeways, highways, streets, transit, rail, air, water, pedestrian paths and bikeways all provide mobility and economic support for our citizens and businesses.
The Northeast Washington Regional Transportation Plan wll guide the future of transportation in Ferry, Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties and provide:
An improved transportation system that helps to build a vibrant economy
Safe and efficient travel to where you live, work, shop and play
In 1990, the Washington State Legislature passed the Growth Management Act authorizing the Regional Transportation Planning Program. This program allows for the formation of Regional Transportation Planning Organizations (RTPOs). Tri-County Economic Development District serves as its lead agency.
The NEW RTPO is an association
of cities, towns, counties, ports, tribes, transit agencies,
and major employers that serve as a forum for developing policies
and making decisions about regional growth management, economic,
and transportation issues in Ferry, Pend Oreille, and Stevens
Counties. The NEW RTPO is comprised of two working committees. The
Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) which is an advisory body
to the Policy Board for transportation issues, primarily technical
in nature and the Policy Board (PB) which consists of various
representatives of public and private organizations. These
Board meetings meet the fourth Wednesday of February, April,
September, and October in the Tri-County Economic Development
District’s office.
The primary purpose of the NEW RTPO is to provide for cooperative decision-making by the agencies within the region in order to bring about a continuous and comprehensive transportation planning process. One aspect of this purpose is to ensure that all local plans are coordinated with and consistent with the regional plan.
